Guy Jones reports from the Gathering of Mustangs
September 2007

Like any set of vacation pictures, they're a bit flat without narration. But you'll find a couple of pictures of the Lancaster, one with a C-5 in the background for scale. The shot of the Lancaster touching down, shot from almost the front, was taken from a huge screen installed just for pictures just like this at Rickenbacker Airport. There were several fairly rare birds, like the P-47, the P-39, and we found examples of almost all the P-51 models, from -A to -D. The khaki P-38 is Glacier Girl, the one retrieved from under the ice in Greenland. The (factory) 2-seat P-51 used by Stallion 51 to teach how to really pilot the P-51 has been mimicked by at least two other like-painted birds, and I managed to get the tail numbers in the shots of the duplicates. The shot of the P-40 is especially for Peter Degl'Innocenti, just to make him feel better. I found this bronze plaque marking the time capsule out in the front lawn area of the Air Force Museum. I don't think very many people even walk out there where it might be seen.
